Are you dreaming of a neighborhood where you can stroll to a coffee shop, grab dinner without getting in your car, or enjoy a leisurely walk through tree-lined streets?
Asheville offers several different opportunities for walkable living.
But here's something I think is important to understand.
Walkability can mean very different things depending on the neighborhood.
Let's take a little tour!
Biltmore Park: Planned Neighborhood Living with Modern Conveniences
Are you looking for sidewalks, walking trails, a community pool, and easy access to shopping and restaurants?
Well, let me introduce you to Biltmore Park!
Located in South Asheville, Biltmore Park offers a wonderful combination of neighborhood living and modern conveniences.
Its proximity to I-26 and Asheville Regional Airport also makes it convenient for commuters and frequent travelers.
Development began in the early 1990s, with Biltmore Park Town Square taking shape in the 2000s.
Inspired by traditional neighborhood planning principles reflected in George Vanderbilt's development of Biltmore Village, the community was designed around the idea of creating a place where people could live, work, shop, and play.
The heart of the development is Biltmore Park Town Square, anchored by a movie theater, the Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park hotel, and the Reuter Family YMCA.
In between, you'll find restaurants, cafes, shops, and gathering places.
It's a great option for date night! Dinner and a movie without venturing far from home?
Yes, please!
The surrounding residential neighborhoods offer condominiums, townhomes, patio-style residences, traditional single-family homes, and larger estate properties.
Residents also have access to walking trails, green spaces, sidewalks, and neighborhood amenities.
Downtown Asheville: Urban Living in the Heart of the Mountains
But perhaps you're looking for a different kind of walkable experience.
Maybe you love the idea of stepping outside your front door and finding restaurants, galleries, music venues, and coffee shops just a short walk away.
If that's the case, let's explore downtown condo living!
Downtown Asheville offers a mix of historic buildings, converted lofts, and contemporary condominium developments.
Depending on the property, you might find exposed brick walls, soaring ceilings, rooftop terraces, or views of the surrounding mountains.
Imagine walking to dinner at your favorite restaurant, catching a performance at the Wortham Center or Asheville Community Theatre, or wandering through the streets and discovering a new art gallery.
There's a certain energy to living downtown.
Of course, there are practical considerations, too. Parking, HOA fees, building amenities, and the occasional noise of a bustling downtown are all things we'll want to discuss.
Remember, we're trying it on for size!
Historic Montford: Architectural Charm and Neighborhood Strolls
Now, if historic homes are more your cup of tea, we absolutely need to take a stroll down Montford Avenue.
Located just north of downtown Asheville, Historic Montford is one of the city's oldest and most architecturally distinctive neighborhoods.
Picture beautiful tree-lined streets, welcoming front porches, and an incredible variety of historic homes, from grand Victorian residences to charming Arts and Crafts bungalows.
One of the things I love about Montford is that no two homes seem quite alike.
The architecture tells a story.
And we certainly won't go hungry while we're exploring!
We could stop by All Day Darling for breakfast and coffee or enjoy the Caribbean-inspired cuisine at Nine Mile, a longtime neighborhood favorite.
With sidewalks, neighborhood restaurants, and downtown Asheville nearby, Montford offers a lovely combination of historic character and in-town convenience.
Of course, owning a historic home can also mean embracing some of its quirks.
Older systems, ongoing maintenance, and renovations that require a little extra thought are all part of the conversation.
For some buyers, that's part of the charm.
For others, a newer home may be a better fit.
West Asheville: Colorful, Creative, and Full of Personality
If you're looking for a neighborhood with personality, creativity, and a fantastic food scene, West Asheville should definitely be on our list.
Centered around the Haywood Road corridor, West Asheville is known for its eclectic character, independent businesses, and vibrant collection of restaurants, cafes, and gathering places.
It's a place where you can grab your morning coffee, browse a locally owned shop, and discover something new along the way.
And let's talk about the food!
West Asheville is a culinary destination in its own right, with favorites like Sunny Point Café, The Admiral, Taco Billy, and Leo's House of Thirst offering everything from casual breakfast to a memorable evening out.
The surrounding residential streets offer a mix of older bungalows, renovated homes, newer construction, and a variety of architectural styles.
Some homes are within an easy stroll of Haywood Road, while others are tucked away on quieter streets.
As always, the exact location makes a difference when it comes to walkability.
Different Neighborhoods, Different Lifestyles
So, let's think about what we've explored.
Biltmore Park offers planned neighborhood living with recreational amenities and convenient shopping.
Downtown Asheville offers the energy of urban living.
Montford invites you to enjoy historic architecture and neighborhood charm.
And West Asheville offers a creative, eclectic atmosphere filled with independent businesses and culinary experiences.
All four offer opportunities for walkability, but the everyday experience of living in each can be very different.
And that's the point. Finding your Asheville is about discovering which lifestyle feels most like you.
