Town Mountain and Weaverville: Two Very Different Ways to Enjoy Mountain Living

Compare Town Mountain's scenic roads and cycling routes with Weaverville's walkable Main Street and small-town rhythm.

The neighborhoods, towns, and communities that make up the greater Asheville area are just as varied as the people who live here.

And that's one of the things I love most about helping people relocate to Western North Carolina.

There's a running joke among those of us in Asheville real estate that everything is about 20–30 minutes from downtown Asheville.

While that's certainly an exaggeration, there is a little truth to it!

If you're comfortable being 20–30 minutes from downtown, an incredible variety of homes and lifestyles opens up.

But here's where things get interesting.

In the mountains, five miles doesn't always mean a five-minute drive!

Let's explore two communities that illustrate what I mean.

Town Mountain: Scenic Roads, Mountain Views, and a Cyclist's Dream

You might find an incredible home on Town Mountain, less than five miles from downtown Asheville.

Sounds wonderfully convenient, right?

Well, depending on where the home is located, that drive could easily take 15 minutes or more.

Town Mountain Road is a beautiful, winding, two-lane mountain road with plenty of curves and elevation changes.

For some buyers, that scenic drive is part of the appeal.

For others, navigating those curves every day might not be quite what they had in mind.

But let's say you're an avid cyclist.

Now Town Mountain might suddenly sound like paradise!

Town Mountain Road provides access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and connects with some of the area's most celebrated cycling routes, including Elk Mountain Scenic Highway.

The challenging climbs, significant elevation gains, and breathtaking mountain scenery are part of what makes these roads so popular with serious cyclists.

You could be living just minutes from downtown Asheville while having access to some of the most beautiful and demanding road cycling in the region.

So what might feel like an inconvenient drive to one person could be exactly what another person has been dreaming about.

Same mountain. Completely different perspectives.

Weaverville: Small-Town Charm with Asheville Just Down the Road

Now, maybe you're looking for something entirely different.

Perhaps you love Asheville and everything it offers, but you're drawn to a quieter pace of life.

You'd like a little walkability, a charming downtown, and a place where you can settle into the rhythms of a small mountain town.

Let me introduce you to Weaverville.

Located approximately 15 minutes north of downtown Asheville in light traffic, Weaverville has maintained a wonderful small-town atmosphere while offering its own vibrant community.

Its charming Main Street, with just a couple of traffic lights, is lined with locally owned restaurants, cafes, shops, and gathering places.

One of my favorite features of Weaverville is Lake Louise, located just outside the downtown area.

The lake offers a lovely walking loop, open green space, and a wonderful place to get outside and enjoy the scenery.

Nearby, the Weaverville Community Center hosts a variety of activities, from fitness opportunities to educational and community gatherings.

The Weaverville Tailgate Market also brings local farmers, food producers, and artisans together, providing another wonderful way to connect with the community.

It's the kind of place where you can enjoy a Saturday morning stroll through downtown, meet a friend for lunch, and spend the afternoon walking around the lake.

And you're still only a short drive from Asheville's amenities.

Which Lifestyle Feels Like You?

Town Mountain and Weaverville can both be relatively close to downtown Asheville, yet they offer two very different experiences.

One buyer might love the winding mountain roads and easy access to challenging cycling routes.

Another might prefer the familiar rhythm of a small-town Main Street.

Neither is better than the other.

It's simply a matter of discovering which lifestyle feels like the right fit for you.

And these are only two examples of the many wonderful communities throughout Western North Carolina.
